"A greater elemental, even. And I’m not. But you know, we don’t have too many greater elementals at school. There’s June, that one guy who’s in like every club, and I think a couple in the middle school. So June gets a lot of attention. And they’ve been getting attention for our entire lives!
“Gran always helped them practice their powers and never played with me. The teachers always called on them even though we were both raising our hands. Everyone only knows me as June’s sister, not as me. And they have so many people who like them, even though they’re weird.”
“Weird, huh?”
“Dude, they keep like, twenty different spiders in our room!”
Three hides a hum of approval and clears his throat. “Ah... In cages?”
“Sometimes!!”
“I see. It sounds like growing up with Juniper has been quite the challenge.”
May sighs. “You could say that.”
“Would you say you feel neglected?” Three’s voice begins to take on a darker tone.
“I… guess?”
“Scorned?”
Her brow furrows. The scratches on her legs sting. “Yeah.”
Three halts. May stops and looks back. His face is unreadable, voice flat as he says, “Would you like to know a secret?”
Her brows unfurrow to reveal the bright eyes of a girl who has never turned down the opportunity to know a secret. “Dude, yes.”
