Leon jolted up in his sleeping bag.

The only sound was the heavy rain upon the school’s roof, yet his father’s voice still rang in his ears. He looked around; it seemed all the other students had gone to sleep as well. How long had he slept? It didn’t matter, because despite the darkness, he could make out a round shape in the sleeping bag next to his. While his augmented eye doesn’t have night vision capabilities, it could still just barely see color in the dark, revealing that very familiar pink hue on the pillow. Seeing the opportunity before him, he thought to himself, I won’t mess up my mission this time, dad.

As to not alert the sleeping Lucille, he slowly reached into his bag and brought out his hunting knife. Unsheathing it, he recalled why he’s attending this school in the first place. He was an assassin, and this was his target. As his knife approached what he approximated was her throat, he hesitated. He’s seen his father’s documents about Lucille; This girl’s a monster. She’s a serial killer known as the Lacerator. There’s no clear pattern to her victims, but nearly each one has been torn to shreds. It’s like she has fun doing it. She’s brutalized dozens of innocent civilians, and has yet to be caught. The police wouldn’t be able to stop her anyway, so it’s up to him to take on the job. He remembers his father’s words once again.

What is the cause of your hesitation?

Truthfully, he didn’t know. He’s done it before, so why can’t he do it now? Why could his hands tie his own mother and light the fire, yet they couldn’t move this knife an inch? Leon closed his eyes and took a deep breath. His heart was beating so loudly he’s surprised his victim hadn’t woken up yet.

Shutting his eyes even tighter, he braced himself to take her life. His hand thrusted the knife upwards into Lucille’s throat. It ripped into her flesh as her blood poured onto his hand. Perhaps out of adrenaline, or just for good measure, he stabbed into the body a few more times. Leon let out a sigh. He had finally accomplished his mission.
